Jets RB Washington broke leg and had surgery

The New York Jets will lose their running back Leon Washington indefinitely as he broke right leg in the first quarter against the Oakland Raiders. The team said Sunday after the game that Washington would be out indefinitely as he underwent surgery on his leg.

“That’s unfortunate,” Coach Rex Ryan said. “It’s obviously a severe injury, but hopefully he’ll be joining us sooner than later.”

Washington went down on his only carry of the day when a defender in Raiders jersey rolled up on his right leg after a 6-yard run. It was a very serious injury and the bone broke through the skin. Washington was helped off the field by two trainers and then taken away on a cart. Later he was diagnosed with a broken right fibula and underwent surgery.

Washington made the Pro Bowl last season as a kick returner. He is also the Jets second-leading rusher with 330 yards on 71 carries. After he left the field, rookie Shonn Greene took over and carried 19 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
