Jets LB Gholston may not play Sunday against Jaguars

The New York Jets may be without linebacker Vernon Gholston while playing Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars as the player needs more time to take care of his strained hamstring.

The Jets’ first-round pick last year didn’t practice all week after tweaking his hamstring Monday in the Jets’ first workouts following the bye-week break. And coach Rex Ryan listed him as doubtful for Sunday’s game.

Hoping to show improvement after disappointing rookie season, the second-year linebacker said he was feeling better Friday and exepct to wear back Jets jersey to play a game, but the team did not want to rush him back, in case the injury could be aggravated.

Wide receiver Brad Smith and cornerback Lito Sheppard are expected to return after the two missed a few weeks with quadriceps injuries. If Smith could play, starting quarterback Mark Sanchez will have all three wide receivers, including Jerricho Cotchery and David Clowney healthy and available to pass ball. Sheppard is unlikely to get starting job back after missing five of the last six games and possibly will play in a rotation with Dwight Lowery.
