Raiders Pro Bowl CB Asomugha will not miss season opener

The Oakland Raiders Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha confirmed on Tuesday that his injured left wrist would be no problem by season opener and he would not miss the game against the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 14.

Such confirmation sounded like a good reassurance to Raiders fans, who had been reading reports that Asomugha might miss the Raiders’ season opener. No wonder they worried. Asomugha suffered the injury during the first play of Saturday’s preseason loss to the New Orleans Saints and later tests showed that there was a chip fracture and cartilage damage in Asomugha’s left wrist. He missed Tuesday practice and was scheduled not to play in Raiders’ final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. But Asomugha said it would be ok for him to wear back his No. 21 raiders jersey and play in the first regular-season game.

“I’ll play in the opener, no problem,” Asomugha said. “If we played today it would be a big issue. I wouldn’t even be able to go if it was today. But it wouldn’t be an issue afterward.”

The fifth-year veteran Stanford Routt will start at right cornerback and Chris Johnson starts at the left side. The two had been competing in training camp for the starting job opposite of Asomugha.
