Wearing a white No. 17 Jets jersey instead of Browns jersey, wide receiver Braylon Edwards was taking part in his first practice with the New York Jets, just over 24 hours after being traded from the Cleveland Browns.
The Jets acquired the wide receiver on Wednesday at the cost of a wide receiver (Chansi Stuckey), a linebacker (Jason Trusnik) and two undisclosed draft choices. The team believes that Edwards will be the big deep threat the Jets had been missing in their receiving corps. While Edwards was catching passes from rookie Mark Sanchez and backups Erik Ainge and Kevin O’Connell during Thursday’s practice, Coach Rex Ryan seemed satisfied with the 6-foot-3 receiver. “He looked tall. He’s big, fast; he’s everything.”
Edwards will start opposite Jerricho Cotchery in Jets’ next game against the Dolphins at Miami on Monday night. Ryan is confident that the new receiver will open things up for the entire for the entire offense. His confidence rooted in the receiver’s familiarity with the Jets’ offensive system, which is similar to what former Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski ran.
